A Good Times Post from Sandra Malone

This is my first time for blogging, so I'm hoping I have something of interest for you.  Technology is overwhelming and makes me wish I had followed along with it while my children were so involved in computers, but no! I wanted to set at the paint table and create fun designs.  For that, I have had a great career (while trying to learn technology).  I have painted a lot of designs for many markets, including painting on many resin pieces for The Artists Club.  Early in my career, I wasn't interested in porcelain or resin but I was painting with oils and now I'm painting only in acrylics.  I'm enjoying the resin so much more.  The "Sugar Plum Angels" evolved for me because of my love of a whimsical style.  I also love painting candy canes or some kind of sweets.  If you have been painting as long as I have, you'll remember my first book "A Candy Cane Christmas".  It's no longer in print, but I keep trying to incorporate those candies in a lot of my designs.  You'll see those in my latest book "Good Times". (notice the title-GOOD).  When I started the designs for this book, it was meant to be seasonal with all kinds of Good Times throughout the year, but as you can see, I just fell back into that good ole candy theme.  With that said, I wish I had some words of wisdom on how I'm inspired, but most everything I do or see becomes a thought for a new design.  Mostly what will keep me inspired is to just keep painting and one thing will lead to another.  I might change directions in the middle of a book as I just mentioned about "Good Times".  I do like to watch trends of colors or designs.  That might be a wide range of dishware to fabric, clothing, magazines, or visiting with friends.  A conversation can get me inspired.  One thing I can share with you is that I have painted all over my house, floors, ceilings, walls, furniture, etc.  That is what I do for fun in between publications.  Recently I was painting on a canvas for a backdrop for "Good Times", and I dropped a quart of paint on my kitchen carpet.  It couldn't be cleaned up so guess I'll just paint a few large flowers, polka dots, or even candy canes on it to cover it up.  Painting on carpet will be a first for me, but If I get a chance to blog again,  I'll keep you posted on how it turns out.  So now talking about that has got me to thinking that I might just get started on it today.  You see how inspiration for me begins, just talking to you and looking at that big blob of paint spattered on my kitchen floor.  Untill next time, keep painting and painting and painting.

A Painting Class

On a recent early Monday morning here in the AC/Purchasing Department, we held a little impromptu painting lesson for the group. We thought that our buyers should have a chance to see how much fun painting can be! So, we painted the Teardrop Ornaments, and had a great time making them become snowmen and a gingerbread. Teri and Anita are beginner painters and chose to turn their ornament into a snowman, where Laraine is an experienced painter who hasn’t painted in a while and she chose to turn hers into a gingerbread. They learned how to stipple and use a deerfoot and angle brush. They stippled faces, used a highlighter brush to add rosy cheeks, and floated some simple shadows for more definition. When all was done, all three of them did a great job, and who knows, maybe we have a few new and excited painters ready to move on to their next project! Hmmm, maybe time for another class, I wonder what it should be.

2 Different Takes on our Modern Nativity

We have 2 designs on our Modern Nativity for you.  The design team of Distinctive Brushstrokes, Judy Diephouse and Lynn Deptula each painted a design for this piece.
Judy’s design is a Delft Design made up brushstrokes, and is absolutely stunning.  Lynn’s design on the other hand, is a beautiful Poinsettia design that you’ll enjoy painting even if you think you don’t paint flowers.
We hope you enjoy this year’s Modern Nativity and the two designs we’ve chosen.  As with all of our resin figures, the supply is limited to stock on hand, and we believe these pieces will be very popular.

Homespun Touches - Ornament Collection is Here!!!

What a thrill to see yet another book in print!  Homespun Touches - Ornament Collection is here!  Christmas is a very special time at our house, and I have so many ornaments already that I think my tree needs to sprout new branches each year.
After finishing the painting and instruction writing in March, and shipping it off to the publisher for them to make it all into a book, I was very pleased by the finished product.  After being so close to the projects for several weeks, it’s a relief to get them shipped off by the deadline, and then a bit of anxiety waiting to see if it all comes together as planned.
This book is all Christmas Ornaments (29 in all), and was great fun to come up with fresh new ideas on existing surfaces.  The Artist’s Club does sell them all.  There’s something for everyone, and I hope you enjoy painting the ornaments, whether you paint for yourself, for gifts, or to sell at craft shows.
I’d love to see photos of what you paint and share them with our fellow bloggers.  Remember, you can send them to the Artist’s Club Staff at blog@artistsclub.com and we’ll be happy to post them.
