Theorem Painting
by Linda E. Brubaker
Theorem painting was a popular art form in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Most often it was taught to young ladies in fashionable academies as a "branch of knowledge". This style of painting is done both freehand and with a set of stencils, and theorems were painted with either oil pigments or watercolors. Most antique theorems painted on paper and silk were executed with watercolors, but this book focuses on the style of theorems painted with oil pigments on cotton velvet. Theorem painting portrays the natural world realistically, but with vivid hues. Linda recommends you start at the beginning of the book and work through the chapters in sequence, as each design builds on the previous one, from easy to advanced. You will learn the basics from tools and preparation to how to correctly cut and use your stencils. 191 color pgs. Hardcover, spiral bound.
